In 2021, two of CESI's student researchers were supported by Sustainable Livelihoods Canada to conduct a literature review to support the Theory of Change process for the In Good Company Collaborative (IGC). The In Good Company Project aims to help women overcome the systemic and social inequalities in the workplace, leading them to more sustainable livelihoods, and to support employers to dismantle the barriers and biases preventing women and young women from thriving in their workplace. The literature scan discusses current issues with diversity, equity, and inclusion in Canadian small to medium enterprises. More specifically, the review explored the barriers and inequalities experienced by women in the workplace, especially in male-dominated industries. The review focuses on the engineering and technology, skilled trades and transportation industries. Based on the research conducted, the authors also offer suggestions for the next steps of the IGC collaborative efforts.
